The following developments took place in September:
METRO
On 13 September 2007 the RPA announced the outcome of the first stage of the procurement process for Metro North. This involved the selection of those candidates who have been pre-qualified for the tender stage of the project. In all, 14 candidates have passed the pre-qualifying stage – 4 infrastructure providers, 5 rolling stock providers and 5 operators. Qualified candidates will now form bidding groups and it is expected that the tender documentation will be issued to those groups by the RPA early in 2008
LUAS
Cherrywood to Bray
Following further public consultation on options for linking the proposed new Cherrywood to Fassaroe Luas line (Line B2) with the DART, the RPA decided on 6 September that the scope of the project would be extended to provide for a link to the Bray DART Station subject to a funding structure which keeps the overall cost within the capital envelope for this project in Transport 21.
Lucan to City Centre
On 27 September 2007 the Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey TD, launched the public consultation process on the route options for the new Luas Line from Lucan to the city centre.
Two broad route options have been identified by the RPA. Option 1 runs from Lucan Village to Trinity College via Ballyowen Park, Liffey Valley, Cherry Orchard, Ballyfermot, Inchicore, James’s Hostpital and Christchurch. Option 2 runs from Newcastle Road in Lucan to St. Stephen’s Green via Castle Riada, Collinstown Park, Park West, Drimnagh, Rialto, The Coombe and Kevin Street. There are also a number of sub-options within these two broad corridors.
The RPA has asked the public and all interested stakeholders to submit their views to the RPA on the proposed route options and the Agency expects to identify a preferred route alignment in 2008.
HEAVY RAIL
Navan Rail Line
Iarnród Eireann applied to An Bord Pleanála on 7 September 2007 for a Railway Order – the equivalent of planning permission for a new rail scheme – to construct the 7.5 kilometre line from Clonsilla on the existing Dublin-Maynooth commuter line to the M3 Interchange at Pace, north of Dunboyne.
This proposal represents to Phase 1 of of the Dublin – Navan rail line project. A feasibility study in relation to Phase 2 from Pace to Navan is underway.
BUSES
Dublin Bus
50 of the 100 additional buses funded by the Exchequer and 25 of the 90 replacement buses part funded by the Exchequer have entered into service by the end of September.
Bus Eireann
13 of the 160 new buses approved for Bus Éireann to enhance existing non-commercial services and provide additional city and commuter services throughout the country have entered service in Cork, Galway, Waterford and Limerick.
ROADS
N11 Arklow/Gorey Bypass
On the 13th September 2007 the new N11 Arklow/Gorey bypass was officially opened ahead of schedule. The new bypass is part of the southern road corridor between Dublin and Wexford. It will replace the existing N11 national route between Clogh and Arklow and will remove in excess of 10,000 vehicles each day from Gorey town and the villages of Inch and Clogh.
