The following developments took place in November:
METRO
On 12 November 2007 the Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) announced that four Qualified Bidding Groups had formed for the purpose of tendering for the Metro North project. All of the four groups include one each of an infrastructure provider, a rolling stock provider and an operator who passed the pre-qualifying stage of the procurement process in September 2007. It is expected that the RPA will issue the tender documentation to the Qualified Bidding Groups in early 2008.
LUAS
Extension of trams on Tallaght (Red) Line
At end November 2007, 15 of the 26 trams on the Tallaght Luas line have been extended by 10 metres to 40 metres. The remaining 11 trams will be similarly extended at intervals up to May 2008.
ROADS
N5 Charlestown Bypass
The new N5 Charlestown Bypass officially opened on 2 November 2007. The Bypass is an 18.2km single carriageway and 5 km of single carriageway slip roads, side roads and link roads. The new Bypass is known as the "John Healy Road" and is part of the N5 national primary route between Westport and Longford. It bypasses both the town of Charlestown and the village of Carracastle following a route to the south of the existing N5. It will remove up to 7,000 vehicles each day from Charlestown and Carracastle.
N2 Castleblayney Bypass
The Minister for Transport officially opened the N2 Clontibret to Castleblayney Bypass on 5 November 2007. It is 15.9km in length and is a realignment of the existing N2 national primary route from the townland of Moy Otra north of Clontibret to the town land of Drumcrew south of Castleblayney town. The N2 is the main arterial route from Dublin to Derry, Donegal and the northwest.
