LUAS

Order placed for new trams

The RPA signed a contract with Alstom Transport SA for 18 new trams with a value of over €50m. Eight of the new trams are for use on the existing Luas network, four each on the Red and Green lines. The remaining 10 trams are for use on the extended Luas lines to Docklands and to Cherrywood which are due for completion in 2009 and 2010 respectively. Delivery of the new trams is scheduled to commence in December 2008.

METRO

Metro North

Following detailed consultation with the public and other stakeholders, the cut and cover tunnel option has been chosen as the preferred vertical alignment for Metro North through Ballymun.

HEAVY RAIL

Entry into service of first of the refurbished DART cars

The first of the refurbished DART fleet were returned at the beginning of 2007. They have since undergone commissioning and began re-entering service during April 2007.

Adamstown station opened

An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, opened the new Adamstown station on 16 April 2007. The new station at Adamstown is complete with Park&Ride facilities and will deliver commuters to Heuston Station in approximately 20 minutes. This represents, effectively, the first step in the enhancement of commuter service along the Kildare Route.

BUSES

Bus Éireann

Funding of €23m has been approved for the purchase in 2008 by Bus Éireann of 75 replacement buses. They will be deployed throughout the Bus Éireann network. This is additional to the funding already approved for the purchase of 160 buses.

ROADS

M3 Clonee to North of Kells

Transport Minister, Martin Cullen, turned the sod on the M3 Clonee to North of Kells national road project on 30 April 2007. The project is being funded by private finance and Transport 21. It has a route length, including connecting roads, of 59 kms, and is the longest stretch of new road to go to construction in the State to date. The main contractors working on the project are the Eurolink Consortium (CINTRA and SIAC) and the main engineers are M3 MeathConsult. The project is due to be completed in Summer 2010.
