PARKWEST & CHERRY ORCHARD STATION & PLAZA OPENED BY MINISTER
New station latest phase of Kildare Route Project
Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey T.D. arrived by train from Heuston Station today to officially open Park West & Cherry Orchard Station, the latest development in delivering the Kildare Route Project.
Commuters living and working in Park West can now travel to and from Heuston Station in as little as six minutes. The station will be served by Kildare commuter trains with 25 services per day calling at the station. The delivery of the station is ahead of schedule, and offers residents and workers in Park West a frequent, reliable, speedy and environmentally friendly commute to the city centre. Commuters in Park West will see a dramatic increase in service on completion of the Kildare Route Project, in early 2010. The opening was also attended by Cllr Charlie Ardagh, representing the Lord Mayor of Dublin.
Park West & Cherry Orchard Station is a unique, visually impressive modern building design designed by Iarnród Éireann Architects, and developed as a public/private partnership between Iarnród Éireann, Dublin City Council and Harcourt Developments. It is accessible to mobility and sensory impaired customers, and features a ticket office, automatic ticket validation machines, ticket vending machines, CCTV and P/A systems, electronic customer information display screens, help points and fire and intruder alarms. A retail unit is also provided. It will act as a transport interchange, with Dublin Bus services directly calling at the station, and an adjacent bicycle park promoting sustainable transport. The station replaces the existing Cherry Orchard Station.
Park West & Cherry Orchard Station is the third new station on the network to be developer-built, and is now owned and operated by Iarnród Éireann. The station is at the heart of Park West Plaza, which was also officially opened today.
Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey TD said “This new modern, fully accessible station will provide a much better commuting experience for Iarnród Éireann’s customers. The station will have the capacity to cater for up to 3,000 passengers at peak hour. Like Adamstown this station has been built in advance of the completion of the Kildare Route Project and it will be able to accommodate the tripling of passenger numbers that the project will deliver by 2010. Iarnród Éireann, Harcourt Developments and Dublin City Council are to be congratulated on their forward-thinking on this project and in delivering a station that is future-proofed against the increase in demand that will occur with the extra services as a result of the Kildare Route Project. This is an excellent example of a successful customer centered public private venture and I would encourage other local authorities to develop land-use transportation strategies which would see more stations like this being built”
