PRESS RELEASE
Bus Éireann Has Increased Capacity On Three Commuter Routes in Leinster by Over 30 Per Cent with Introduction of Double Deck Commuter Coaches
Bus Eireann has increased peak-time capacity on major commuter routes in Leinster by over 30 per cent through the introduction of the country’s first double deck commuter coaches.
The use of the state-of-the art accessible coaches has seen a 30 per cent increase in the level of capacity at peak-time on the 109 Cavan-Kells-Navan-Dunshaughlin-Dublin route. While peak-time capacity on both the 111 Athboy-Trim-Dublin and 120 Edenderry-Clane-Celbridge-Dublin routes has been increased by 50 per cent.
Under Transport 21, Bus Éireann has introduced 32 VDL double deck commuter coaches for operation in Leinster on medium to longer distance commuting routes in and out of Dublin in an investment of €15m.
The coaches are top-of-the-range high-specification vehicles that adhere to the highest EU environmental standards and feature semi-leather passenger seats with head rests, air conditioning, tinted double glazing, and are wheelchair accessible. Each bus can carry up to 78 passengers.
Noise levels on the coach are lower than on a bus and additional security for the passenger and driver is provided by a multi-camera recording CCTV system. An on-board GPS system provides real-time information on the vehicle’s location.
“The double deck coaches have proven to highly popular with customers as they combine high levels of comfort with increased seating and frequent services. This service gives commuters an excellent value-for-money alternative to the car,” said Andrew McLindon, Media and PR Manager, Bus Éireann.
Over the last year as part of Transport 21, Bus Éireann has introduced over 200 accessible, environmentally friendly new buses into service in an investment of approximately €60m, which has enabled the expansion of existing services and the introduction of new routes.
